What is a Chai Latte?
The word “chai” means “tea” in many Asian and European languages but in North America most people are referring to “masala chai” when they ask for “chai”.
Masala chai is a black tea brewed with a mixture of aromatic Indian spices and herbs; usually cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, pepper, anise seed and a touch of honey. A Chai Latte is an excellent sweet, spicy and creamy drink made with steamed milk or cream. They are super yummy!
A chai latte (sometimes called chai tea latte) is a latte made with a masala chai tea concentrate and steamed milk. Essentially it is a latte that replaces the espresso part with a masala chai tea concentrate instead.
Chai is a spiced black tea. So it’s basically a spiced tea with the steamed milk. It does contain caffeine and is sweetened but it still contains some of the healthy qualities of tea. Chai lattes are creamy, sweet, spicy, and delicious! A Chai latte is an alternative to espressos, cappuccinos and standard lattes and is great hot or cold.
